— The U.S. citizen must supply evidence that both partners can marry without legal restriction. They also must give proof of at least one face-to-face meeting in the last 2 years. Such proof can take the form of itineraries, receipts, or other tangible documents that prove the couple was together.

— If gathering all of this documentation seems daunting, ask family and friends to help gather the information. They may have items such as photos that prove the validity of your relationship.

— The best way to approach this process is for a couple to consider their best times together and then find evidence that would prove to a stranger that it happened. For instance, if the first date was dinner and a movie, try to provide the meal receipt and a ticket stub to prove it happened.

At first, this whole process can seem overwhelming with its many applications and forms to file. Demonstrating the validity of your relationship will require both answering questions and supporting your claims with evidence. However, at the core of the entire thing is convincing the officer that you and your partner are in fact in love and committed to one another. Remember that simple bit and you should be fine.
